Urban fossils tour in Madrid

A few days ago, La Casa Encendida organised a guided tour on Madrid's urban fossils as part of the URBAN TV festival. In this event, everybody could see the fossils hidden in two monuments: Lope de Vega statue, in front of La Encarnación and Cervantes monument, on España Square. We also visited two underground stations clad in fossiliferous limestones: Ciudad Universitaria and Metropolitano.

Fossils and art at Green Park underground station

Green Park Underground Station, in London, has recently undergone an extensive renovation. The new entrance and the pavement are now made of Portland Stone, a Jurassic limestone quarried on the Isle of Portland, Dorset. This stone has been widely used in London and elsewhere as a construction material since Roman times, and as a result it has become quite ubiquitous in this city.  Read More…

Rudists on the pavement of an underground station of Bucharest

The Politehnica underground station of Bucharest subway hides a stunning collection of rudist bivalves on its pavement that ignored every day by most passengers. The pavement of this underground station has been paved with slabs of a red limestone that are very rich in fossils, particularly in bivalves of the rudist group.  Read More…
